Nominations are now open for the 2009 Australian Awards for Teaching Excellence. Please consider nominating for these awards. It would be great to see the ESL field represented.

The awards this year will be made in the following six categories, with an additional Minister’s Award for Excellence in ICT:

  • Excellence by a Teacher
  • Excellence in Teacher Leadership
  • Excellence by a Principal
  • Excellence by a Beginning Teacher
  • Excellence by a Support Staff Member
  • Excellence by a School and its Community

Teaching Australia is again managing the awards nomination and selection process, in partnership with the Australian College of Educators.

The closing date for nominations is 19 June 2009. The presentation will be made by the Minister for Education, the Hon Julia Gillard, in a ceremony in the Great Hall, Parliament House, Canberra in October, in association with World Teachers’ Day.

 

English as a Second Language Educators (SA) Inc.

ESLE supports and represents ESL educators in all educational sectors - primary, secondary, tertiary, adult and community - to achieve quality education for ESL learners. Download the constitution approved at the ESLE AGM on 30th July 2005.

ESLE

  • has over 100 members from primary, secondary, tertiary and community sectors
  • provides representation for ESL educators at state and national forums
  • provides a range of learning and development activities
  • publishes and distributes state and national journals

ESLE provides a variety of learning and development activities. These focus on

  • language teaching and learning
  • cultural exchange
  • ESL teacher standards
  • advocacy

Affiliations

ESLE is affiliated with ACTA - the Australian Council of TESOL Associations Inc - the national coordinating body representing all teachers of English to speakers of other languages.

ESLE participates in national bi-monthly telephone hookups with ACTA council members. Through ACTA, ESLE is represented on national working parties.

ESLE is also affiliated with CEASA - the Council of Educational Associations of South Australia. ESLE is represented at CEASA Council meetings and keeps informed of issues related to professional associations.

Publications

Through ACTA, ESLE members receive two editions per year of TESOL in Context. This publication contains articles form national and international writers. Click here to go to ACTA publications page.

ACTA also publishes occasional background papers. The four already published are: ESL and Literacy, The Role of the ESL Teacher, ESL as an Additional Language and ESL in the Global Hypermedia Environment.

ESLE publishes two editions of the ESLE Journal per year, containing articles from South Australian educators and support staff. Back copies of both journals are available. Click here to go to the ESLE publications page.

Membership

Members receive

  • notification of ESLE events
  • lower cost for the ACTA conference
  • two editions per year of the ACTA journal TESOL In Context
  • other background papers
  • two editions per year of the ESLE Journal

Memberships are from 1st June to 31st May the following year. However, memberships received from 1st March will receive full membership of the proceeding year.

Standards

ESLE has been collaborating with ACTA in the development of national teacher standards for both ESL teachers and for all teachers of ESL students, documented on the ACTA website.

Involvement

You can become involved by

  • becoming a member
  • sending in ideas or comments
  • becoming a committee member
  • writing articles for the journals giving a presentation on behalf of ESLE
  • giving a presentation on behalf of ESLE

ESLE has a privacy policy that endorses the National Privacy Principles set out in the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.
